A well functioning ERP (Enterprise Resource Management)
program is vital for accurate information to be given to decision makers
throughout the entire organization. A good system will have the entire company
tied together. Information input in one area of the company will direct
other departments to do different tasks.
Often companies don’t take advantage of all the entire functionality
of their ERP computer system. This often happens in the Materials organization.
The Buyers use data input by the Planners and the inventory sessions (kept
up by warehouse personnel) to make decisions every day. Decisions made
from improper information will drive part shortages and excessive inventory.
Below are a few examples of ERP optimization projects completed:
- Heavy Equipment manufacturer needed to implement Work Orders
for their ERP system. Ruth worked with the shop floor management and
leads along with the Production Planner. Inputs included work center
information, routings, bill of materials and production schedules. Work
Orders were launched on time and all needed personnel were trained on
their part of the process.
- Trained all planning and purchasing staff for (medium sized Portland
manufacturer) on all Item Master fields and the importance of utilizing
the fields correctly. This can increase the effectiveness of reports
which are used for purchasing and planning decisions. Results were more
timely and accurate purchases and production schedules. This reduced
confusion on the shop floor (less shortages/more accurate schedules)
and decreased excess inventory dollars and storage constraints.
- Assisted in implementation of large ERP (BAAN) system. Taught Planners
how to input data properly into sessions that would feed into fabrication
shops, assembly shops, and purchasing, for schedule and buying decisions.
Taught warehouse and inspection personnel all the sessions needed for
maintaining a very large storage, receiving and shipping department.
Below are examples of entire company ERP software implementations
completed by Ruth Miller Consulting:
- ERP (QAD) implementation at Yoshida Foods Corporation. This
project had an added challenge of inputting recipes instead of normal
bill of materials. Trained every Manager, Planner, and Buyer. Worked
through all the implementation issues until completion and the company
was satisfied with their new system.
- A golf bag manufacturing ERP implementation was particularly
challenging as each golf bag was individually configured to order. This
included several options including fabrics and personalized embroidery.
When the project was completed, Work Orders were completely configured
to allow fabric cutting and embroidery operations know exactly how the
product should be made.
- Managed company wide ERP implementation at two sports equipment
companies which included all departments: purchasing, planning,
shop floor, customer service/sales, accounting, receiving, shipping,
and warehouse.
